Professional Attention
Hopefully the majority of the trees in your community will be in good condition, and not need to be looked at by a professional, but some will need to be followed up with. Volunteers can be trained to collect data on trees, but they are not capable of evaluating whether or not a tree poses a risk and may harm people or property. Experts are needed to make professional opinions when it comes to dealing with If volunteers are in the field collecting data and they come across a tree they think an expert needs to evaluate they should make a note in their record.
There are many different situations that may need to be evaluated by a professional. Large dead branches in the crown, or hanging branch pose a risk to things below the tree and may point to other less obvious problems with a tree. Trees that show large holes, and large sections of rot need to be evaluated as well. Occasionally an entire tree can begin to lean over and may also pose a risk to falling.
